In 1804, the Osage Nation controlled a vast land base stretching from the Missouri River to the Arkansas River in the current states of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. By 1837 the Osage had signed a series of misleading and fraudulent treaties. During the 1860s and 70s the Osage lived on a strip of land in Southern Kansas where the Ingalls family squatted. For some time in the early 1900s the Osage were among the richest people in the United States. Please join us for a discussion of the events that led to the forced removal of the Osage people from Missouri and their relocation to Oklahoma.
